Executive Search: expertise from management experience

How does a company go about finding top managers or executives with specialist expertise? This question is all the more relevant in a year where a virus has turned the global economy upside down and required companies to make structural changes at an astonishing rate.

Let us take the position of Chief Digital Officer (CDO) as an example. Here, there are several questions which arise: Was the position newly created? Is it already part of a digitalisation strategy? Or should the candidate develop this with a team?  Is the company about to restructure? What prospects does the industry have? Is it a question of transformation, restructuring or growth?


Transformation

The company is realigning itself and investing in lucrative fields of business. As a result of a company acquisition, new structures and new processes may potentially have to be created and implemented, and evolved application landscapes merged or replaced.

Here, as well as strong technology know-how, management expertise are the order of the day. After all, a transformation can quickly lead to restructuring if it is not well managed.

 

Restructuring

The company is not operating profitably, products and services are no longer being marketed lucratively, perhaps the costs of application development have got out of hand. Different areas must be linked up with one another, product lines must be stopped and teams merged. Suitable candidates should be able to optimise value creation processes and guarantee competitiveness.

 

Growth

If the company is undergoing a growth phase, this places specific demands on a candidate too: innovative ideas and a viable future positioning in the digital transformation process.

However, it is often not clear in the job description exactly what awaits the candidate. But an experienced executive search consultant can identify the focus of the role very quickly, especially if he or she has her own management experience.
